Chapter Thirty-Eight
Tara
I was laying it on thick and not even trying to be diplomatic about the extent of my dislike of Dimitri. But I couldnât stand the man and wasnât at all surprised to hear about his latest bout of bad behaviour. His philandering was the whole reason that Josie hadnât spoken to me for almost eighteen months.
He tried it on with me last Christmas when I was in the kitchen spreading whipped cream across the pavlova. He stuck his finger in the bowl, which annoyed me, and put it in his mouth suggestively. I mean, yes, he was quite a good-looking guy in a Greek waiter kind of way, if you were into that. Plus, I knew his sleazy type only too well and my sister was far too good for him. But how do you tell your sister that you think her husband is a complete bellend? How did I tell her about his latest attempt at seduction, this time with her own sister. I mean, what would I say? Tell everyone as I sliced up dessert and handed it to them? It would utterly destroy her. There was no way that I could tell Mark what happened until Dimitri had departed, as he would have certainly thumped him.
âEh, do you mind, Dimitri?â I said, trying to distract him as if he was a little boy. âGo and fill the kettle or do something useful. Like scrape those plates into the recycling box.â
He scowled and raised his eyebrows at me in quite a suggestive manner. All I could focus on was the fact they desperately needed a trim, which I was on the verge of suggesting. But before I said anything, he reached across the bowl of cream and put a splodge on the end of my nose. Not exactly appealing, eh?
âWhat are you doing, you idiot?â I said, wiping it away with the back of my hand and onto my apron.
âOh, I do love it when youâre mad. So sexy,â he said and guffawed.
Oh dear God. My brother-in-law was making a pass at me while I sorted the Christmas pudding. We werenât actually having the traditional pudding as nobody liked it, hence the meringue. I did momentarily wonder how he would have done the same trick with a steamed fruit cake. Was that where Iâd gone wrong? âDimitri,â I said again, âhow about you go and make yourself useful? Go and check if anyone needs a top-up. Take another bottle of white out the fridge and a red one from the wine rack.â Over the years Iâd got quite used to his suggestive behaviour and managed to deal with it, swerving times he tried to be alone with me and defusing awkward comments he tended to make in social situations. I thought Iâd handled it all quite well. Until now. I couldnât work out why my sister put up with him. Sometimes I wondered if she thought he was the best she could manage.
âYou want me,â he said.
